an evening at the

Gur Tish

Herring, schmaltz herring, eggs & onions, hummus — set out board by board, as it has always been.

Come to the table

The Table

At a Hasidic tish, the Rebbe's table becomes the center of the room — song, story, and food shared among those gathered close. Among the Gur court, the spread is simple and exact: herring cut thin, schmaltz herring rich with onion, eggs folded soft, hummus set warm, and the platter that carries all of it at once. This is a small, made-believe seat at that table.

Herring

Cut thin, laid in rows, a little oil catching the candlelight. The first thing set down at the tish, and the first thing gone.
